Straight run bitumen, that is, bitumen produced from the distillation of crude oil, can have its physical properties altered by blowing air through the bitumen at elevated temperatures which are termed “Blown” grades. By varying the degree of blowing, bitumen of differing properties can be produced. The numbers relate to the midpoint of the material’s softening point and penetration respectively.
